Photograph was edited for publication purposes. A nation-wide strike against America's vast telephone network cut off most long distance communication yesterday in the United States and the head of the striking National Federation of Telephone Workers said the union is settling down for a long shutdown of the industry. The N.F.T.W. has about 287,000 members in the 39 affiliated unions that are participating in the walkout. Other unions, not members of the N.F.T.W. but co-operating with it in the present dispute, account for 53,000 additional employees. The strike in its first day knocked out 80 percent of all long-distance calls but interrupted less than a fourth of the nation's local service. Photograph dated April 12, 1947.
