Description
Photograph of Don Juan Benavides singing to children in Pasadena City Hall plaza. "Pasadena marking its 75th birthday. Pasadena -- This city's 75th birthday party began Wednesday. Residents joined city officials at a kickoff breakfast, the first event of Diamond Jubilee celebration, around outdoor tables on the City Hall plaza. Junior Chamber of Commerce members served sausages and hot cakes to a breakfast crowd of more than 500 as the talk ran back to June 19, 1886, when Pasadena was incorporated. Founded as the Indiana Colony in 1874, the area, a village of 2500 residents, incorporated 75 years ago to get rid of its only saloon. The population is now 120,000. Eight days of events have been scheduled to mark the occassion. Highlights next Monday include a horseless carriage motorcade downtown, State and County Day exhibitions and a commemoration luncheon at the Huntington-Sheraton Hotel. Warden Woolard, editor of The Examiner, will speak at luncheon." -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated, "May 18, 1961". "Don Juan Benavides' serenade gets a mixed reception from audience. Girl watches with awe
little cowpoke looks like he might draw any time
adults enjoy it." -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated, "May 18, 1961". "Diamond Jubilee breakfast. Don Juan Benavidez, with guitar singing to children in City Hall plaza." -- Examiner photoprint slip attached to verso, dated "5-17-61".
