Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Ben Rouw regarding United Technology Center strike negotiations. Script reads, "Striking electricians at United Technology Center plants have returned to work. The more than 300 members of Local 1201 of the International Union of Electrical Workers voted last night to have a 30-day strike truce while negotiators attempt to settle their dispute. The week-long walkout has affected UTC plants at Sunnyvale, Redwood City, Coyote and Cape Kennedy. Negotiations broke off last weekend when the IUEW filed charges of unfair labor practices against United Technology. Channel 11 news talked with Union Field Representative Ben Rouw about the exact nature of those charges." Segment 2 (silent): Shots of military planes on tarmac having the letters on the sides and tails changed from MATS to MAC (Military Airlift Command). Story reads, "The Defense Department has dealt a stunning blow to the huge naval air base at Moffett Field. The Pentagon announces the Navy will be phased out of the military air transport program within the next 13 months. Earlier this year, Navy work crews were changing the lettering on the sides of the huge C-130 transport planes. The Air Force will soon take over all the work with the planes..." Segment 3 (silent): Baseball game. Script reads, "The San Jose Bees opened their week-long home stand at Municipal Stadium on a sour note tonight, as they lost to Santa Barbara Dodgers 9-1...the league-leading Dodgers put together 5 big runs in the top of the 5th to put the ball game away...the Bees only run came in the bottom of the 3rd. The Dodgers Joe Ramares [sic] went all the way, scattering 8 hits, for the victory. While starter Jack French was charged with the loss...the Bees are now at an even 4 and 4 on season, while the Dodgers stand at 7 and 1...the same two teams will go at it again tomorrow night at Municipal Stadium, game time is set for 7:30..." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Lear jet taxiing on tarmac, women in suits wearing "YORTY" hats wait to greet the plane; man emerges from plane and shakes their hands. Group of men in suits walking, trolley decorated with "Elect Sam Yorty Democrat for Governor" banners. Script reads, "Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Mayor Sam Yorty of Los Angeles said today that the Brown administration has taken control of many local matters...leaving the municipalities no jurisdiction over local problems. The much-talked-about mayor of the state's largest city arrived at the San Jose Municipal Airport this morning via charter plane from San Francisco. He is in the area to address the San Jose Optimist Club's weekly luncheon meeting. San Jose Attorney Garvin Hale, Co-Chairman of the Yorty campaign locally, welcomed the mayor to the city, along with San Jose Mayor Dr. Joseph Pace and a bevy of lovely locals." Segment 2 (sound): continuation of Yorty story. Interview with Mayor Yorty about Governor Brown's "bookkeeping trickery" to pretend he has a balanced budget. Script continues, "At an airport news conference, Yorty said the doctrine of pre-emption by the current administration has magnified local problems such as highway administration, air service jurisdiction and law enforcement, by taking away all local control. On another matter, the Southern California candidate had this to say regarding GOP candidate Ronald Regan's criticism of Governor Brown's proposed Budget...We also asked Mayor Yorty to comment on the proposed accrual accounting system..." Segment 3 (silent): African-American young man being led into a courtroom, sign for Superior Court Courtroom No. 1, Honorable Raymond G. Callaghan presiding; shots of attorneys seated at tables. Script reads, "McDowell Case. A ten man, two woman jury has tentatively been seated in the Clarence McDowell murder case. They are subject to preemptory challenge tomorrow morning, but courtroom observers feel a final jury will be seated by tomorrow afternoon. Jurors were excused because of the length of the impending trial, many others objected to the death penalty. McDowell's case is being heard by Superior Court Judge Raymond Callaghan, who sits in the downtown courthouse at 190 North Market Street. Security is heavy for the accused murderer, who has to be brought in from the main jail two miles away. He is defended by attorneys Wester Sweet and Paul Dana. Deputy District Attorney Harry Parker and Hal Chapman are prosecuting the case. They have indicated they will ask the death penalty in the trial. The proceedings are expected to last four weeks. McDowell has entered a plea of not guilty, and not guilty by reason of insanity. A three part trial will be needed, with a guilty or innocent verdict, and then a sanity and penalty phase if he is found guilty." Reel 3 (sound): Interview with unidentified man, giving his response to question, "What is your reaction to the use of city police on state college campuses?"
