2009-0346 In PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM: **qc917.9471 C6, pg. #23 In: Scenes of Santa Clara Valley In the middle distance on the right two men are in the process of laying down a thin flat of prunes; a man dressed in a suit and hat appears to be directing the workmen; in front of these men and behind these men are rows and rows of flats of prunes; in the middle distance on the left is a cart loaded with flats; above the cart are rows of flats leading to a series of one-storey buildings at the right. "Thousands of tons of Prunes are dried in the sun at this "Cambell Dryer." The trays are four-by eight feet in dimentions. On a foggy night - the trays are hurriedly piled up-and spread the following A.M. Three or four days will usually suffice for the drying. The prunes are allowed to thoroughly ripen-are shaken from the trees, picked up, boxed and hauled to the "dryer" and sold by the ton, where they are wash, - graded and "dipped in scalding lye before drying."
