Vincent de la Osa Adobe, built in 1849 by Don Vicente De La Osa, was a favored stopping place for the numerous travelers on El Camino Real. It stands on land that is a part of the one-square-league Rancho El Encino granted in 1845 by Governor Pio Pico to three Indians, Ramon, Francisco, and Roque, whose interests were purchased by Don Vicente. Originally the land was under the jurisdiction of Mission San Fernando Rey founded in 1797. Photograph caption dated November 12, 1959 reads "Plans for restoration of Los Encinos State Historic Monument in Encino are discussed by, from left, Mrs. Walter H. Welker, Mrs. Ted Gibson, Mrs. Harold Wirtheim and Mrs. Robert Austin. Women are members of committee that has worked for 14 years to secure state aid for restoration of first Valley home." The women are members of the Encino Historical Committee. They are in costume standing in front of the Garnier Building on the site, once used as ranch hand quarters.
