Description
Two photos of miners, mounted side by side, on a board, held in place by corner mounts. On left is photo of Cornish miner, with pickaxe in right hand and resting on shoulder, and a candle and bucket in his left hand. Under photo, handwritten in ink on board: "Wm. Doidge." On the right is a photo of a Mexican miner, with a long staff in his right hand and a bucket in his left. Under photo, written in ink on board: "Patricio Avila." Adhered to bottom of board, typewritten: "Dean. S.B. Christy of U.C. College of Mines picked these men as being typical Cornish and Mexican miners at New Almaden." On back of photo of Cornish miner: Handwritten in ink: "Wm. Doidge, 1890's. Chosen by S.B. Christy, Dean College of Mines, University of California as a typical Cornish miner at New Almaden, Calif." Stamped in ink: "Laurence E. Bulmore 1831 San Pedro Berkeley, California." On back of photo of Mexican miner: Handwritten in ink: "Patricio Avila, 1890's. Chosen by S.B. Christy, Dean of the College of Mines, University of California, as a typical Mexican miner at New Almaden, Calif." Stamped in ink: "Laurence E. Bulmore 1831 San Pedro Berkeley, California." On back of board: Handwritten in ink: "Laurence Bulmore."
