Description
View 1 (2009-1108). Shows airship on beach, crowd of spectators including group of women, two young girls in foreground -- view 2 (2009-1109). Shows same scene, automobile in foreground. Airship was on exhibit for five weeks during winter of 1905. Captain Thomas Scott Baldwin's gas balloon was cigar-shaped dirigible made of Japanese silk, was 54 feet long and 17 feet in diameter. Built in Oakland in 1904, made ascents at World's Fair, St. Louis, in Nov. 1904. Named California Arrow, made historic ascents at Chures Park in Los Angeles when flown by Roy Knabenshue in late Nov. 1904.
