Description
This circa 1907 photograph provides a view of the library at the Elks Temple at 824 J Street. Prominent is the beam work and molding, made of Flemish oak and mahogany. Bookcases bracket a fireplace, in front of which is a large, wooden table surrounded by leather chairs. The library sat on the second floor of the five-story structure, along with the lounging room, billiard and card room, cloakroom, and secretary’s office. Once complete, members of the order told the “Sacramento Union” that the temple to be was the most complete and luxurious Elks facility west of the Rocky Mountains.
