"Bible Womens's house and small school, Swatow." Catherine Ricketts of the Women's Missionary Association, English Presbyterian Mission began recruiting bible women shortly after her arrival in Shantou in 1878. A house for the bible women was opened in 1888 with six women averaging in age from 47 to 63. "During their first vacation they visited nearly seventy villages and introduced the Gospel message into 120 families." Band, Working His Purpose Out, p. 210.
