The demonstrators are protesting the alleged excessive force incident secretly recorded by an NBC-TV camera crew, in which Don Jackson, a former African American police sergeant for the city of Hawthorn was shoved through a plate glass window by a Long Beach police officer after a traffic stop.
Photograph caption dated March 12, 1989 reads, "Demonstrators rally in front of the Long Beach Police Department yesterday in support of Don Jackson, an off-duty Hawthorne police sergeant whose confrontation with a Long Beach officer earlier this year was taped by an NBC News crew. Cal State Long Beach Professor Amen Rah speaks to the crowd, made up mostly of students from the college."
