View 1 (2011-1581). George Washington -- view 2 (2011-1582). Limb of George Washinton used as rustic sign post. "Tree limb. Calaveras Big Trees" - handwritten on verso -- view 3 (2011-1583). Morning sunlight on top of George Washington. "Morning sunlight on the George Washington Tree. June 11, 1934" -- handwritten on verso. Verso stamped with "Bear Photo Service, June 16 1934".
George F. Haas was born in Westport, Mendocino County. In 1933, hitchhiked to Calaveras Big Trees State Park where was employed. By 1934 became head park ranger, serving until 1935. While working here, compiled history from original settlers to region into book, Guide to the Calaveras Big Trees.
