This Chevrolet assembly plant opened in 1947 and produced the Chevrolet Corvair, Chevrolet Nova, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet full-size models and the Pontiac Firebird. The plant was closed in 1992 after the production of Camaro and Firebird vehicles was moved to Sainte-The´re`se Assembly in Quebec. In 1998, the facility was razed and replaced with a large retail and industrial complex, known as The Plant. GM continues to operate a car-testing facility nearby. Line worker, Barry Hatten assembles wheels onto a Trans Am chassis as one of the final steps of the assembly line. GM announced Thursday that the Van Nuys plant will remain open, spared because of a plan for cost-saving Japanese-style shared shifts. Photograph dated November 7, 1986.
