Description
Photograph of tower pouring concrete to build dam in Plumas County. Donor/Source: Ron Hanford (owned by Glenn Way) GMW 1420624
The prominent feature in this photo is the tower that was used in pouring the concrete into the dam. The concrete flowed from the cement mixer to the tower's base, and then was lifted in a bucket by electronic motors up the tower to the Shutes. It then flowed down the shutes to the section of the dam that was being poured. Notice the man walking along the suspended shute. It was his responsibility to keep the concrete flowing smoothly. There are two pour sites that are active in this photo, which took three gangs of men; one at the mixer and one at each pour. Lord and Bishop were the contractors on this dam as well, so they built from this side of the river, and then the equipment was moved to the other side of Bucks Creek so that they could build the other half. They also had a large rock crusher that ground up some of the "muck" coming out of the tunnel over to Grizzly Creek, and the rock was used in the cement for the dam. The rest of the muck was dumped beyond the lake bed. Audio Tape #13A-513.
