In the 1960s, Burbank hosted a number of civil defense drills in which hundreds of workers from dozens of city and county organizations dealt with simulated emergencies brought on by a hypothetical major earthquake. The people "injured" in the exercise were brought to Bellarmine-Jefferson high school which served as a practice field hospital. In this photo, dated 1964, four teens recuperate from their imagined wounds. Notes on the back of the photo (though likely not contemporary to the photo) indicate that the drill imagined a nuclear disaster, though Los Angeles Times articles indicate an earthquake was the focus of the exercise. From notes on photo: “Nuclear Disaster Exercise” and “1964.”
