Article by Charles Handy exploring the phenomenon of corporate gigantism and how its various parts can and should work together. Handy begins the article discussing how the organization world is becoming one of fleas - independents, sub-contractors, consultants, and start-ups - that feed off the elephants, who provide them with protection and a future. He proceeds to remark how large corporations face three simultaneous challenges, namely, globalization, contractualism, and professionalization, and that the tendency of these three challenges is to pull organizations apart. Handy therefore stresses that there needs to be a unifying and inspiring dream within organizations, especially large ones, which employees can identify with and aspire toward. Such a shared dream and set of principles is what, according to Handy, binds a diverse elephant organization's parts together.
