Description
Photograph of Automobile Service Station near collapsed building after earthquake, Compton, March 1933. In the extreme foreground, the sign of a small service station can be seen alongside a wide, paved road. Previous version of record stated: "Service station located at the northwest corner of Long Beach and Compton Blvds". A row of at least four automobiles can be seen along the road traveling from right to left. On the opposite side of the road, two heavily damaged buildings can be seen. The roof of the building at left has completely collapsed. At right, one of the corners of the structure is missing, and cracks can be seen through the front wall. Debris from the damage sits along the sidewalk near the road. Legible signs include: "Four Corner Service S[tation] She[ll]", "Economy Gasoline First Grade 12 cents", "Moto Gas 10 9/10".
