Description
Exterior view of the Bella Union Hotel. Excavation for new construction is taking place to the right of the hotel. The building to the left was built between June and September of 1868 for Pio Pico. Hellman, Temple and Co. opened there on September 1, 1868. The banking firm was the predecessor of Farmers and Merchants Bank, which was the predecessor of Security First National and later Security Pacific National Bank. Horace Bell described the hotel in Reminiscences of a Ranger.
