Description
Sitting together in a garden is a family of five children. The youngest boy on the left wears a gray outfit in a masculine style. His skirt is a kilt, pleated on the sides and back. Over this he wears a loose gray waistcoat and coat with wide scalloped lapels, edged in black. Small black buttons trim the cuffs, pockets, lapels, and center front of the waistcoat. The triangular side pockets of the coat are trimmed with three buttons. He wears a white shirt and a small red bow tie. To complete the outfit he wears striped stockings, black boots, and a flat brimmed straw hat trimmed with ribbon. He and his sister fight over who gets to play with a red and yellow doll or jumping jack. His baby sister is dressed in white eyelet. She wears a white skirt with a scalloped hem; a wide band of eyelet edges the hem. Her jacket is made of bands of eyelet creating the bodice, the peplum of the jacket, double rows for the short sleeves, and a section at the center front to be a blouse. It seems to be tied at the front with ribbon. Her ribbon-trimmed cap is made of two rows of pleated eyelet. She wears white stockings, white shoes, and a white bead necklace. She pulls on the arm of the doll (which may be a "Punch" or a jumping jack) with one hand while she holds a round toy rattle in the other. The older sister in the center of the illustration leans on her oldest sister's lap while they read a book. The girl wears a pink satin dress. The front of the dress is a smooth apron style panel with horizontal striping along the lower-third. The back of the dress has three layers of wide ruffles and is gathered up at the back. She has a pink sash tied into a large bow at the back. The bodice has short, puffed sleeves trimmed with white lace. and a square neckline also trimmed with white lace. To complete the outfit she wears white gloves, white stockings, pink boots, and a wide, pink ribbon in her long blond hair. The oldest girl sits in a round-back chair and reads and/or instructs her sister from a book. Only the shorter length of her skirt tells the viewer this is a teen, not a grown lady. Her underskirt is blue with thin, vertical darker stripes. The pale blue over skirt is loosely pulled up on the sides to create a drape across the front and at the back. She wears a pale blue fitted jacket over a white ruffled blouse. The jacket has a double row of dark blue buttons. The lapels are dark blue velvet and the edges of the jacket and cuffs are trimmed with narrow bands of dark blue velvet. The wide cuffs are accented with wide blue bows. her hair is dressed up in rolls at the sides, with falling ringlets at the back and small curls at the front. Her straw bonnet sweeps up on the side, trimmed with rows of pink flowers and greenery above and below the brim. Wide blue bows also adorn the hat. She wears black heeled ankle high button boots wit scalloped cut at the upper front. The older boy leans against the back of her chair while modeling a brown Knickerbocker suit. His jacket has a single button at the top and is cut to hang on a diagonal. The lapels are narrow and high, with a single slit breast pocket and one hip pocket. He wears a white shirt and brown waistcoat of which only the lower portion is visible through the opening of his coat. His Knickerbocker breeches are gathered in just below the knees. He wears red stockings and black low heeled boots. To complete the outfit he wears tan gloves, a red bow tie, and carries a shallow brimmed hat.
