Description
"Native Wedding, H & W in centre of group." Group portrait outside a building. The indigenous bride and groom are sitting in the middle with a large group gathered around them. Purulia is situated in the Santalia mission field in the Manbhoom district. The main station of the United Free Church of Scotland was based at Toondee [Tundi] while the mission at Purulia was established by the Gossner Mission Society of Berlin. This image is from a collection of photographs which possibly belonged to Dr Karl Uffman. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, joined the Kikuyu mission, from 1901 to 1905, and was the son of Dr Henry Uffman who ran the Leprosy Asylum in Purulia, West Bengal.
