Stereograph showing dead soldiers among trees in an area called the Slaughter Pen to the right of the Union line at the foot of Round Top in Gettysburg, July of 1863. Title from caption. Alt title from recto. Written on verso: The woods at the foot of "Round Top," which was the "right" of the Union line, were named by the soldiers "the slaughter-pen." The enemy made a desperate attempt to gain a foot-hold on Round Top, for it was virtually the "key" to the field. The woods on the slope were strewn with dead. This view gives a glimpse among the trees, showing the harvest of death.
