Waist-length portrait. "To my dear friend Karl C. Weber very cordially Gaetano Merola" -- handwritten along bottom.
Born in Naples in 1881. Emigrated to the United States in 1899, worked as conductor with several companies before moving to San Francisco in 1904. Organized his first opera company in 1923, founded the San Francisco Opera. Died in 1953.
