Description
Interior view of east wall of main waiting room in the Southern Pacific Railroad passenger station, Sacramento. The mural, painted by John A. MacQuarrie, was unveiled August 22, 1931. The artist has created a unique vision of the January 8, 1863 groundbreaking for the Central Pacific Railroad at Sacramento. Leland Stanford stands at the center holding the shovel and flanked by other members of the Big Four and Theodore Judah. The artist memorializes the surveyors, engineers, and laborers, including the Chinese, who carried out the actual work of building the transcontinental railroad. Other forms of transportation are also illustrated including a covered wagon and ships.
