Description
This circa 1955 photograph shows two men posing inside Johnson’s Restaurant at 1019 Tenth Street. To the left is restaurateur George Johnson, a Greek-American who immigrated to the United States in 1913. After spending his formative years on the east coast, Johnson moved to Reno in 1939. It was there that he opened a restaurant offering a ten-cent-or-less menu. He expanded operations to Sacramento and soon thereafter moved to the Capital City in 1947. The Giant Shop Restaurant and the Del Prado were two of his best known eateries. His son’s own chain, Eppie’s, would, for decades, be an area institution prior to its closure in 2004. The elder Johnson died in December 1979, having lived 81 years of business, politics and mindful philanthropy.
