Description
Group portrait of the Hupa Tribe dressed for and participating in the White Deerskin Dance. Photographer: A.W. Ericson, Photo Finishing Job Printing Arcata California. Donor/Source: Florence Styles. Published: Palmquist, Peter. Fine California Views, Date 1975. Only men participated in the White Deerskin Dance, clad in highly-prized clothing made of albino deerskin. A.W. Ericson became famous for his photographs of the dance, for his pictures fo the Indians were circulated widely throughout the United States. During ceremonies such as the White Deerskin Dance, a white man's presence was often viewed by the Indians as a nusiance, and more than once Ericson was required to pay a mode's fee of five dollars to take pictures. Even so, his scenic views were often blurred by the motion of his uncooperative subjects. hm
