Presidential Candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara holds a microphone as he speaks at a campaign rally in front of a crowd of people, many of whom are Mayan. Many are wearing colorful traditional Mayan clothing. Behind Guevara there are four campaign flyers with a portrait of him wearing a military uniform. There is also a large poster that reads, "Vote like this." On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
