Description
V1p266c -- v1p266d In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 266 center left and right. These photographs are contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco." Text written under photos: "Soldierettes in training at the Presidio S.F. 1916." Both views show a group of female recruits lined up in two rows near a wooden building, with the Golden Gate visible in the background. In the photo on page 266 center right an officer is raising a flag. Soldierettes were at the Presidio attending National Service School, a program set up by the Women's Section of the Navy League to increase the preparedness of women for war. The course included first aid, elementary hygiene, home care of the sick, marching and drilling. Students were being trained to support the Armed Forces.
