George and Phoebe Hearst purchased part of Bernal Rancho southwest of Pleasanton (which also contained the Alisal Rancheria where a community of Ohlone Indians still resided). In 1880, William Randolph Hearst began building a mansion on the rancho, Phoebe Hearst took over construction, hiring the architect Julia Hunt Morgan. Mansion built in Mediterranean and California Mission style and named La Hacienda del Pozo de Verona. William Randolph Hearst sold property in 1924 to group of businessmen, became the Castlewood Country Club. Mansion served as clubhouse from 1925 to 1969 (when it burned).
