Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. Dan Kimberly was a Construction Branch Chief for Caltrans District 4 in San Francisco. When the Loma Prieta Earthquake happened he was driving on Interstate 280 and he noticed that the car was jumping off the ground. Kimberly drove to the San Jose Maintenance Station after the earthquake and asked to contact contractors to look at damage. Kimberly spent most of his time on Highway 17 with the slide on Laurel Curve. He had to find a place for where Caltrans could remove the dirt from the slide and working with contractors and utility companies to get the highway fixed. Kimberly also recommended that they limit the access to Highway 17 for commuters so that the road could get fixed.
