Description
Furnaces roasted the ore to transform the mercury into hot gas, which was then collected and cooled. The mine's incredible output required vast quantities of firewood. Text on back reads: "One of Frank Bohlman's teams hauling cord wood for the furnaces, New Almaden Quicksilver Mines, Calif. Tom Stiles, teamster. Note the unique "hitch" three horses in the lead making a seven horse team. Photo late 1890's"
