Description
In this May 1927 photograph, Sacramento area rancher Edgar Simpson, left, edges out another rider in a chariot race at the California State Fairgrounds’ racetrack. Spectators sit on the eastern edge of the track. The chariots were part of the Sacramento ’49 roundup, the idea of Sacramento car dealer William I. “Bill” Elliott. Not only did his efforts and prize kitty of $20,000 draw the nation’s best cowboys, but planners had to acquire and ship in animals from across the West, including 70 wild horses for bucking and 65 Brahma steers from Texas, said to be “of an old Indian strain and noted for their ferocity.”
