Description
Interviews conducted by Erv Rasmussen and Douglas M. Perham at Perham's home in New Almaden, California, on June 14, 1963. Part 1: Wireless pioneer Archie Stevens was born in Litton, Iowa, and graduated Stanford University (1909). He discusses the earthquake in Palo Alto in 1906; working for Poulsen Wireless/Federal Telegraph Company as chief draftsman, designing and installing wireless stations in California, Oregon, Washington, and the Midwest. He left Poulsen/Federal with Cyril Elwell in 1913 and built stations throughout Europe. Discusses his experiences with Lee de Forest in Palo Alto while de Forest was at Federal Telegraph. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War I, after which he worked for the Hearst Corporation building high-speed printers. Interview with Stevens ends at 54:49. Interview with Kenneth V. Laird begins at 55:00, who was an electrical and civil engineer, and head of noise and vibration laboratory at Mare Island. He worked with C. Thordarsen on a volt transformer for the Panama Pacific International Exposition and discusses the Fair in the interview. Part 2: Laird interview continues with discussion of the members of the Bay Counties Wireless Association, (supposedly) the first amateur radio club on the Pacific Coast. He also gives an account of Bakersfield, California, in the 1890s, the Jewett and Blodgett asphalt production in that area, and the 1906 earthquake east of Bakersfield. This recording is part of the Perham Collection of Early Electronics.
