Description
The instructor Harry Claflin (left) leans forward and touches a yellow, inflatable raft that the survival school students (L-R), Jack Madeley, Joel Turner, and Brian Schwarz will later use to attempt a beachhead assault. An unidentified assistant stands in the background in between Turner and Schwarz. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
