Photograph of a drawing by Carlos Nebel depicting what a well dressed California horseman would have worn in the 1830's and 40's, ca.1839. A mounted vaquero is at center, facing to the left. He is riding a large dappled gray horse with its head raised high in the air. The man is wearing the costume of a Mexican cowboy, complete with flared pants decorated with different patterns and a cape wrapped around his shoulders. He has a broad brimmed hat and thick sideburns.
