The Long Beach Fire Dept., Engine Company No. 1, firefighters and horses, pose in front of the Central Station at 210 West 3rd. St. The station was built in 1906. The engine company consists of a steam fire engine, a hose wagon and a ladder truck, all pulled by horses. On the left is a motorized vehicle. Long Beach has the distinction of being the first fire department west of the Rockies to have a motorised fire engine and in 1907 purchased two Rambler motor driven units with 40-gallon chemical tanks and 500 feet of hose each.
