A Los Angeles Railway "Yellow Car" travels past the Old Pico House, designed by Ezra F. Kysor and built by Pio Pico in 1869-70 as a three story, 33-room hotel. The Pico House (Casa de Pico) is located on the old plaza at 430 North Main Street, just opposite Olvera Street. At the time of its opening, it was the most extravagant and lavish hotel in Southern California. After decades of steady neglect, it was deeded to the State of California in 1953, and later became part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Monument.
