Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s.
This 20-page booklet is an excellent example of efforts employed during the 1940s to combat the anti-Semitic agitation of the period, and to offset anti-Jewish propaganda. "What to Do When the Rabble-Rouser Comes to Town" was distributed to Jewish communities to warn people against doing and saying things which stirred up controversy with anti-Semitics, thus giving them and other Nazi sympathizers the attention and press coverage they sought. It states: "Show your friends that the more they shout in public against the Rabble-Rouser, the more they inflate him!" and "If you do your job well, he'll howl to a handful of crackpots, the lunatic fringe." The booklet is printed in red and black ink, and fully illustrated in cartoon fashion. 8 x 6 in..
