Description
“A group of some of the Hospital staff in 1939. Incl. matron Miss J.C. Wilson, self [Dr Irvine].” Group portrait of the staff of the Chogoria hospital with the new block, opened in January, behind. The dressers now wear white uniforms with red fezzes and trainee nurses have started under the supervision of the matron. Miss Jean M Clark Wilson came to Chogoria in 1939, and was the hospitals first sister. She was the niece of Rev James Youngson, missionary at Kikuyu, and left Chogoria in 1942 to join the East African Military Nursing Service, she drowned when the troopship she was on was torpedoed. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1947 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
