Born in the Los Angeles County area of Cudahy and a College Football Hall of Famer, John Ferraro (May 14, 1924-April 17, 2001) served as councilman for Council District 4 from 1966 until his death, the longest tenure for city service. Sam Yorty (1909-1998) served as the mayor of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1973, in addition to having served as an assemblyman and congressman for California. William Parker (1902-1966) became police chief in 1950 and is recognized for his substantial contribution to the city's police department.
