This is a photograph of Maryknoll priests on a bike ride in their plain clothes. From left to right are Frs. Karlovecius, Franco, Moffett and Drew. Born in Illinois, Fr. Karlovecius came to Maryknoll in 1944 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1948. He departed that same year for Wuchow, South China. In 1951 his mission was taken over by the Communists and he was evicted to Pingnam, China. After eight months of house arrest he was expelled from the country. He was then assigned to Japan and later returned to the United States. -- Rev. Franco was born in Brooklyn, NY. He entered The Venard, Maryknoll's Apostolic College in 1939, and was ordained at Maryknoll, New York in 1948. He was assigned that year to Kongmoon, and after a year of language study to Hoingan. Put under house arrest when the Commuists came to power, he was transferred to Canton in 1953 and later that year released to Hong Kong. Later that year he was assigned to Transfiguation Parish in New York City. In 1956 he was assigned to Taichung, Taiwan. In 1957 he was killed there in a traffic accident.
