Joseph Spencer Cone, born in 1822 in Marietta, Ohio, came to California in 1850. Settled in Tehama County in 1859. In 1869 bought Rancho Rio de los Berrendos, a ranch located on east bank of Sacramento River near Red Bluff. 14,000 acre ranch combined agriculture (wheat, orchards) with stock (sheep, cattle, etc.).
