Description
Photograph of "City garden" (name?) general store at Eighth Street and San Pedro, ca.1923. The two-story shop, whose main sign reads "Harness" was started in 1874 by F.X. Eberle and his wife, Marcetes, and contained about six acres. It was the first stop the Santa Monica Railroad made out of the city. The shop's brick wall is obscured by a thin tree to the right, while its wood-veneered front is obscured by a telephone pole. Streetcar tracks are visible embedded in the unpaved road. Other legible signs on the building read: "Strap Work", "Puritain Hams and Bacon", "Whips", "Union Gasoline", "[...]Ellas" and "[...] rear". A wooden cutout of a pointing man stands above the main sign.
