In order to find out exactly what must be removed from auto exhaust to reduce the eye irritation in smog, human reactions to various mixtures must be observed under clinical conditions. Breathing the mixtures under plastic masks, members of a panel sit in partitioned compartments, so that they cannot see each other. This prevents one person from being subconsciously influenced by seeing another person's reaction. Panel members are not told whether they are breathing mixtures containing auto exhaust, or just purified air. Neither are they told whether it is irradiated or non-irratiated.
