Description
Oto no Miya (1308-1335), also known as Prince Morinaga, was the son of Emperor Godaigo who had been forced into exile in 1331. Morinaga led an army against the military dictatorship in an attempt to restore the monarchy. Yoshitoshi uses an historical figure to comment on current events, as the Emperor Meiji had just overturned the military government of the Kokugawa family and moved the Imperial Palace to Tokyo. Many of the warriors depicted in this series were loyal to their Emperors. The prince is depicted raising a straw hat and wears a straw rain cape. His outer robe has been made translucent by the damp, and the pattern on his sleeves is visible through the fabric of his outer garment.
