Founded as Hesperian College in 1861 in Woodland, California by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the institution changed its name to Chapman College in 1934 following an endowment by Charles Clarke Chapman. The Los Angeles location, 766 N. Vermont Avenue, is now a parking lot for Los Angeles City College. The college moved to Orange, California in 1954 and was renamed Chapman University in 1991. Photograph caption dated November 22, 1949 reads "Everett B. Luther, second from left, vice president of Chapman College which is to be Christian University of the Valley, uses map to illustrate features of new institution for, from left, Sterling M. Howe, Fred Weddington, member of board of directors of North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce; Kersey Kinsey, Studio City chamber president, and Claire S. Newberry, president of the North Hollywood Chamber." The church was never built in the San Fernando Valley.
