Description
Photograph shows the First Methodist Church in San Jose. Palm trees line the streets and frame the church. Cars are parked along the street in front of the church. People mill about the church's entrance. A banner on the church reads "1847-1947 Centennial, Nov. 2-Nov. 9. San Jose's First Methodist Church." Handwritten on the bottom recto of the photograph: "Time marches by as centennial is on, Nov. 2, 1947." The San Jose First United Methodist Church was founded in 1847. This church has been named variously First Methodist Church, First Methodist Episcopal Church, First United Methodist Church, depending on various divisions and mergers in the history of the Methodist denomination in the United States. "It has been located in various buildings in the downtown of San Jose, and it has been located at the corner of East Santa Clara Street and Fifth Street since 1910. In 1991 the historic Church structure was destroyed by fire." A new church is being built in its place. From: "First Church Downtown - About our downtown San Jose church," http://www.firstchurchdowntown.org/about/history.html (accessed 10/7/11).
