Description
Two photostat copies of the original are included with the album, both of which have typed captions on reverse: 1) "This picture was taken on the fast launch that carried the radio apparatus used in the kite experiments performed by Dr. Chas. D. Herrold and Emile A. Portal. Messages were received from stations halfway round the globe. Dr. Herrold is holding the kites in his hands. Portal is seated at the instruments." 2) "1916. This picture was taken on board the Idalia while Herrold and his operator Portal were experimenting with French War kites. With these kites and high amplification receiver (several kites in tandem) they copied messages from German, French, English, and Japanese radio stations."
