Description
Photograph of A.F. Harmer's painting "Lassoing a Bear", ca.1855. Three men in bolero dress are shown on horseback surrounding and ensnaring a bear after a bull and bear fight, the bear splaying itself across a fallen tree. The hunter farthest right holds the end of a taught lasso that has tightened around the bear's neck. Forest is visible behind them, and what appears to be a second group of hunters can be seen in the distance to the right. The picture file card identifies the men as the Ruiz brothers at the Callegus Rancho in Ventura County. The image is from a photocopy reproduction in USC's files.
