Description
A large group of Contra soldiers, some sitting and some standing, rest at El Porvenir Farm, located two kilometers from the Honduras-Nicaragua border, in June 1983. They are each holding an assortment of FN FAL and Kalashnikov assault rifles and wearing military uniforms and caps. The third soldier from the left is wearing a black beret and a gray polo shirt with blue horizontal stripes. The second soldier from the left is wearing a blue-and-white patch that reads "FDN," which identifies him as a member of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force. In the background there lies a steaming pile of debris and scrap metal. As members of the FDN, they and others like them are known informally as "Contras."
