Sports Photography, 1889-1989 A pioneer big man for UCLA at six-foot-6 1/2, Frank Lubin starred on the Universal Studios-sponsored team that won the 1936 national amateur championship, defeating the powerhouse Globe Oilers team from McPherson, Kan. Later that year, Lubin captained the U.S. team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics--the first time basketball was contested at the Games. In the gold-medal game, the U.S. outlasted Canada 19-8, in a contest played on an outdoor court during a driving rain-storm. Photo dated: February 13, 1931.
