Description
Nisei female, born December 2, 1923 in Madera, California. Her father died when Fumiko was nine; her mother had five other children to care for. The family endured hard physical labor under primitive conditions on their fruit and cotton farm. At age 19, Fumiko was attending Fresno State College when she and the family were evacuated to Fresno Assembly Center, then to Jerome, Arkansas. In 1943 she left camp to live with a sister in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fumiko married Fred Nakagawa and they had five children. She was widowed, then married Moss Akutagawa in 1982 and moved to Los Angeles.
